The Merchandise Lofts

The iconic Merchandise Lofts, designed by architect Paul Northgrave and completed by Cresford Developments in 2003, is the title holder to many ‘firsts’ among Toronto Lofts. It was the first loft conversion designated heritage in 1997, the first large-scale warehouse conversion at over one million square feet (526 units) and the first multi-phase loft project resulting in five separate condominium corporations.

With original building construction beginning in 1916 for the Robert Simpson Co., and later used as the Sears Merchandise Warehouse, the Chicago-style, stucco structure was completed in 1950 and finally completed four decades later in 1950, after several additions.
The handiwork that went into the conversion of this building was of the utmost quality. Cresford Developments received several awards for the loft’s design and construction back in 1999.

The building boasts an indoor pool, a gym with sauna, and even an indoor half-basketball court. Residents can also take in the sunset from the common rooftop terrace. Dog owners needn’t go far, as the building offers a specific dog-walking zone on the roof.

Ever popular with loft buyers, the sheer size and scale of the building offer many different unit sizes and floor plan variations ranging from five hundred square feet to over two thousand five hundred square feet, along with a full suite of building amenities. The exposed twelve high concrete ceilings, sizeable fluted mushroom columns, warehouse-size windows and some incredible city views are prime features. The Merchandise Loft’s convenient central downtown location, close to the Yonge subway line, Eaton Centre and the financial district, certainly also adds to its appeal.
